on this primary day bernie sanders and joe biden battle for delegates in six states the confrontation between biden and an auto worker in michigan as both cancel rallies over coronavirus concerns a long love affair with their team and each other captured each night on the kiss cam. >> announcer: this is "nbc nightly news" with lester holt good evening, everyone parts of a quiet suburb just outside new york city have been declared a coronavirus containment zone a first in this crisis state officials closing schools, halting gatherings and deploying the national guard in the town of new rochelle it is center of a virus cluster with more than a hundred cases of covid-19. governments across the world wrestling now with just how far they need to go to stop its spread again, our reporting team in place around the world. let's start with ron allen. >> reporter: the heart of new rochelle, a city of some 70,000 just north of new york virtually on lock down

tonight because of what governor cuomo says is the largest cluster of coronavirus cases in the country at least 108 and surging higher more than double the number in new york city >> this is literally a matter of life and death. that's not a ordering a containment zone, a circle with a 1 mile radius centered around a local synagogue where a rabbi and other congrugnts have tested positive for the next two weeks several schools, and institutions closed. several food stores still open >> it is important to clarify this is not an exclusion or quarantine zone. no one is prohibited from entering or leaving the area >> reporter: the national guard will deploy to help clean necessary buildings, deliver supplies to residents in the zone. >> i really can't believe it happened. i've never experienced anything like this >> reporter: local officials urging calm,

saying the guard will not be establishing military-like check points many of the cases linked a new rochelle resident and his family a lawyer hospitalized in critical condition with underlying health issues his wife and two children have also tested positive. hundreds here who may have been in contact with the infected residents already have sel self-quarantined >> i think there's a lot of confusion right now especially because we're not aware what's going on >> what's the plan to test residents who live inside that zone? >> reporter: well, lester, even some of the residents who have self-quarantined say they've not been tested yet so the plan is bring a mobile satellite lab here and test people on the spot so they can understand immediately the ux tent extent of the problem. the numbers here may very well go up. >> ron allen tonight, thank you. as this crisis ripples across the country a wave of precautions from school closures to

major events canceled as that cruise ship continues to unload those who are sick and could be ill miguel almaguer with more from oakland. >> reporter: escorted by emergency teams in full hazmat suits the sick and elderly among the first to disembark the "grand princess" cruise ship. but the nightmare extending to shore some moved to military bases. >> this is kind of disheartening because, you know, we've got bills to pay, wave got a family to cakeory of feed >> reporter: passenger carrie has stage 4 cancer and has already missed one chemo session. now in quarantine she doesn't know how she'll get treatment next >> i'm hoping the cancer isn't growing while this other potential problem exists >> reporter: in washington state an unfolding crisis at the life care

nursing home the epicenter of the outbreak, 55 confirmed cases and 71 others showing symptoms as two separate nursing homes report additional deaths. >> the spread in the community is probably much wider than the testing suggests today there's probably as many. that number could be in excess of 70,000. >> reporter: with the number of confirmed cases and destination wide climbing more states are declaring emergencies. large events like the coachella music festival now postponing until october over coronavirus fears. and many americans are taking their own precautions. this ride share driver creating a protective bubble in los angeles one restaurant taking temperatures at the door turning anyone away with a fever. >> so many people think this is death sentence, and it's just not >> mark jorgenson and his wife tested positive for the virus. >> there's really no reason to panic over this your odds of getting it are small, and if you do get it your

odds of recovery are very great >> reporter: but tonight hospitals and government agencies are taking no chances as scenes like this play out at sea and onshore. the official number of coronavirus cases on the ship behind me remains at 21, but doctors expect that number to rise lester >> and miguel, life around us continues to change i know there's late word tonight about more colleges canceling classes. what do you know about that >> reporter: lester, yesterday we told you many classes had been canceled for the week or maybe even month. but we're learning some universities are actually shutting down for this semester. officials say expect more outbreaks and cluster of the illness but generally most people recover quickly. and tonight the virus is causing serious and growing disruptions for the nation's airlines. several announcing more flight cancellations and big cuts in airfares here's tom costello. >> reporter: it's an all out effort to convince airline passengers that planes are clean and safe

in a video released delta unveiling a new fogging disinfectant >> the disinfectant is highly effective >> reporter: the coronavirus effect has been fast and devastating for the airlines planes half empty with business and families canceling travel plans. the ceo of delta airlines today said they'll have to park some planes. >> we have seen a 25% to 30% decline in net bookings and are prepared for it to get worse. >> reporter: delta, american and united all cutting back on u.s. and international flights. the ceo of southwest now says the coronavirus is having a greater impact on travel than 9/11 >> 9/11 wasn't an economically driven issue for travel it was more fear, quite frankly. and i think that that's really what's manifested this time >> reporter: the nation's airlines insist america is still open for business, but airlines dropping airfares well into the summer.

new york to atlanta, 46% cheaper. san francisco to new orleans, 60% off l.a. to denver, down 73%. >> we've seen a shift in demand away from international destinations toward more domestic destinations >> reporter: while u.s. airlines are waiving ticket change and cancellation fees congress is warning most travel insurance does not cover coronavirus cancellations because the threat was known as of mid-january. lester >> all right, tom costello, thank you. and as the trump administration deals with this crisis it's keeping a very sharp eye on wall street after some wild swings today the dow finally closing up more than 1,100 points making up some ground. kristen welker reports on the white house's response so far. >> reporter: president trump trying to calm fears during a visit to capitol hill. >> we're doing a great job with it and it will go away just stay calm. >> reporter: the president's message coming as he personally pitched republican senators on his ideas to bolster the economy. according to the administration and

senate sources among the measures floated a payroll tax cut through the end of the year and expanding paid leave >> it was a great meeting. there's great unity within the republican party. >> reporter: while some republicans have traditionally opposed cutting the payroll tax cuts because those fund social security today some signal they'd be open to it >> well, i think the package needs to be negotiated >> reporter: but the president could be on a course with democrats who argue a tax cut would not help everyone >> we can only support an initiative that puts families first and not trickle down solutions. >> reporter: the president did not provide specific information about how much the plan would cost or when it will he'll announce ly more details soon. lester >> kristen welker at the white house. thank you. and now to that situation in italy it's a country on an unprecedented lock down officials taking that dramatic step to try and stop the spread of coronavirus leading to remarkable scenes tonight. iconic tourist

even treatment for coronavirus is close at hand. >> we are optimistic because we've done this approach to treat many human diseases. 7 different diseases >> reporter: the company regeneron is in a global race among pharmaceutical companies to tackle coronavirus. scientists here are creating pseudo coronavirus. meaning the virus minus its ability to replicate, allowing them to leverage what they believe is their secret weapon, mice housed in these protective structures whose immune systems had been genetically altered to mimic those of humans. the brainchild of george. >> with the idea being you could challenge these mice with any disease potentially get an immune cure >> reporter: in a typical vaccine like the flu shot, for example, the injection contain as small amount of the virus to cause your body to develop antibodies

against it but that can take weeks in this case regeneron essentially exposes the mice to the pseudo coronavirus. they then create the antibodies when delivered to humans provide immediate protection >> they are in the process of testing each antibody to how well it blocks the virus. over the course of the next several weeks they will choose the best ones, create this cocktail, put in these cell lines that can be scaled up into these giant vats and off to the races. >> it's the same process regeneron brought to fight against ebola, an antibody treatment that dramatically boosted survival rates in africa. >> producing something that can change the course of this epidemic is extremely exciting >> the company is targeting human testing by late summer and is optimistic enough that it plans to simultaneously begin producing 200,000 preventative doses per month. do i call it a medication or a vaccine you're working on >> some people would

to get some perspective on where we are in this crisis let me bring in our chief medical correspondent dr. john torres it was only a few months ago we were talking about how deadly the flu season it why is this virus so worrisome? >> boegtd tth the flu and coronavirus are pres respiratory illnesses. we know the flu is seasonal it'll start to wind down come summer but when it comes to the coronavirus it's still mostly a mystery. we don't have any treatment. it appears to be more deadly than the flu especially in the eld laer and continues to spread faster than we expected the hope is it'll also be a seasonal virus, but, lester, only time will tell. >> doctor, thank you tonight unprecedented recommendations from the nursing home industry to keep out the coronavirus by curtailing family visits as more americans worry about their loved ones sam brock has the

story. >> reporter: tonight at the morse health systems ipwest palm beach the moment you enter the building new steps to protect the vulnerable and elderly. >> we must take every precaution to ensure their safety and they're expecting that from us. >> reporter: nationwide the nursing care leaders issuing new recommendations to strictly limit visits, screening all staff and contractors and even discouraging social visits by family and friends arthur and nola are heartbroken at the prospect they might not be able to see their family for the pass over holiday. >> i'd rather not see them if there's even any trouble. i rather they stay home, be safe and we talk on the phone every night. >> reporter: in portland, oregon, bonnie poland can't visit her husband, gerald, who's suffering from parkinson's. >> i feel very close to tears a great deal of the time because i don't know what's happening to him i worry about him terribly >> reporter: experts say for the 2.5 million americans who live in nursing

chicago get a special tribute. kevin tibbles has their story. >> reporter: the action on the ice was between chicago and st. louis. but it was the kiss cam that brought the crowd to its feet. 92-year-old roselee deutsch in her usual perch above the ice. missing on this special night, her husband of 70 years, earl earl and roselee were regular romantics during kiss cam segments on the stadium jumbo tron >> who was the best kisser >> my husband. >> reporter: season ticket holders for 60 years. earl served his country in the navy in world war ii, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather. when earl recently passed away at the age of 93 more than 21,000 fans said thank you. he was your star >> all the time. >> reporter: two college sweethearts whose affection melted the ice and made everyone's heartbeat a little faster.
